Craft to Save Your Life!

You all may remember when Stitch Red visited The Today Show to raise awareness about the campaign and spread the word about using crafting - knitting, sewing, crochet, macrame, whatever is your passion! - to reduce stress and lower blood pressure, which helps to keep your heart healthy.  It's a win-win!  Along with wearing everything we could find in the color red, we made a bunch of signs to hold up for the cameras to identify our group and get our slogans out there - messages like "Knit more, stress less!" and "Red wine is good for your heart - just ask Kathie Lee and Hoda!".  They made a fantastic impression, so since then, we have been taking them to trade shows with us to decorate the Stitch Red booth.

But one of those signs hit very close to home for one crafter we recently met.  Zoe Brown, who stopped by the Stitch Red booth last weekend at Vogue Knitting Live in Seattle, immediately grew excited when she saw the "Quit Smoking & Start Knitting" sign on the wall of our booth - you see, Zoe has done just that!

A smoker for 30 years, Zoe knew she needed a little help to kick the habit - more specifically, she needed something to keep her hands busy and take her mind off her cravings.  That's where knitting came in; she took up the craft and formed a brand-new habit: a creative one!  Zoe also started spinning her own fibers into yarn - she knit the shawl she's wearing in the photo with yarn she spun herself!

But Zoe gets much more from knitting and spinning than just something to do with her hands: she says it relaxes her, almost like a form of meditation.  That's something we've heard from other knitters and crafters as well - practicing a repetitive motion helps the mind relax into an almost Zen-like state.

As one more added benefit, Zoe says the money she used to spend on cigarettes is now available to spend on spinning and knitting - her healthy habit :) .  With all of these great side-effects combined, Zoe has stayed away from cigarettes for five months!

Congratulations, Zoe - we are SO proud of you and your accomplishments and we hope your story inspires others to give up unhealthy habits for heart-healthy ones!

What habits do you have that you'd like to trade?

Happy Halloween...and High Blood Pressure Basics

First, Happy Halloween from the ladies of Jimmy Beans Wool! We hope you have a safe, happy, healthy Halloween (try not to eat all the candy like I've been doing...).

Kristen and I are back from VK Live and are still floored from the response of mid-westerners to our Stitch Red campaign. So, what was the hot ticket item this past weekend?

The Kollage Square Needles!

Ergonomic (for hours upon hours of knitting), sharp tips (seriously) and they come in a snazzy red metallic color - what's not to love? I even got myself a pair of the Kollage Stitch Red double points to cast on my Turkish Bed Socks. I know I have more needles than I need, but I'm a knitter! I just never know when I might need an extra set...

I've been trying to catch up on the heart-healthy news I missed over the past weekend. I stumbled upon this adorable, animated video from The Heart Truth explaining what's really happening when our hearts are working overtime due to high blood pressure. It must be the kid in me who really enjoyed this short video...take a look!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Anniversary to The Heart Truth!

Check out the Jimmy Beans Wool tribute to The Heart Truth. We're hoping to inspire change in women nationwide with our Stitch Red campaign! We're humbled and oh so proud to be your partners in fighting this silent killer.

Celebrate the Anniversary of The Heart Truth with us!

Today marks the start of a ten day anniversary celebration in honor of The Heart Truth. Our partners in the Stitch Red campaign have been spreading the word about women's heart health since 2002 and have since seen an increase in awareness of this silent killer. In 2009, 7 in 10 women identified heart disease as the #1 killer - an increase from 6 in 10 in 2008. Part of the awareness increase is due to the Red Dress logo seen on Diet Coke cans across the country. This small, red symbol signifies a call to action - "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear - it's the #1 Killer of Women."

In honor of the 10th anniversary of The Heart Truth, we've been asked to share how we've inspired others to be heart healthy. Our response will be posted on October 1st in response to a video prompt on YouTube. In the meantime, we'd love to show our support for this campaign by having YOU share how you've inspired others to be heart healthy...or even how you've inspired yourself! Visit us at Twitter or on Facebook to share how you've inspired heart-healthy change!

Healthy Heart Spotlight: High Blood Pressure

We learn something new everyday as we work on the Stitch Red campaign - it's as eye opening for us as we hope it is to all of you! Our partners in this effort, The Heart Truth, have made it their mission to spread awareness among women and we've joined them to do the same! To keep spreading awareness, we thought it would be helpful to go over some of the details of the most prominent risk factors of heart disease. Today marks the first of a series of Heart Healthy Spotlights and it's all about High Blood Pressure.

High Blood Pressure is the most prevalent risk factor of heart disease. In fact, it affects 1 in 3 American Adults. If we look at the ladies (and men) of Jimmy Beans Wool as a sample of American adults, about 13 of us could suffer from high blood pressure - that's huge! Coincidentally, Stitch Red began when Laura and her husband, Doug, found out that he had high blood pressure. As two active, thirty-somethings this was a huge shock. We thought heart disease only affected older men and women from 55-60. Boy were we wrong!

I think high blood pressure is part of what gives heart disease the reputation of being a "silent killer." The condition typically has no symptoms, so it's easy for someone, like Doug, to go on with his active life thinking nothing is wrong. The scary part is that a person can live with high blood pressure for years and during that time the condition is damaging the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other vital parts of the body. It's crucial to know your blood pressure numbers. If you're blood pressure is normal, you can continue to work at keeping it at that level. If your blood pressure is high, your doctor can get you set up with a treatment plan to start sticking it to high blood pressure (and more serious risks).

To keep our high blood pressure in check, we run, walk, participate in Cross Fit and kickboxing classes! We also try to keep our ice cream treats to a minimum, but with the heat in the 100s these days sometimes we could use something cold! What do YOU do to keep your heart happy?

If you're interested in learning more about preventing and controlling high blood pressure, The Heart Truth has a fantastic reference you can look through here.

Barry Klein Sets Stitch Red Trends

Poppy yarn in Red Barron
Barry Klein of Trendsetter Yarns truly is a trend setter himself. We asked him to share a little bit about the Stitch Red product that his company will be contributing. This one is unique, not just in its style, but in that a portion of proceeds from ALL colors of this product will go to the cause. You can view other colorways of the Poppy yarn here.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Stitch Red campaign?
I chose to get involved with the Stitch Red campaign because of who our customers are. Most of our clients are woman and without clients we have no business. We must all work together to fight heart disease. I also come from a family that fights high blood pressure and obesity and stroke, all that can be fought with a healthy heart.

What product have you created for the Stitch Red campaign? What was your inspiration behind it?
Terry wearing a Poppy scarf
We selected a product called Poppy which is a scarf yarn that is a wide mesh that has wool tops attached to one edge. I created a jacket in Red using three of my favorite yarns and attached Poppy as the detail effect. I love that scarf yarns are still the most fashionable. I love that they are easy to knit, quick to knit and be crochet as well. What is better for your heart than to have something to hold onto that feels incredible and is easy to do……makes my heart happy!!

What's your favorite heart healthy tip?
A group of us have been doing Weight Watchers for the past year. It is important to learn a way to enjoy the foods you love but maintain the idea that quantity is something to watch. In addition, we have been doing 3 hours of Zumba in order to get our heart rates up and get into an aerobic state. Food is really important. It is my reward and so doing the exercise allows me to enjoy the foods I love.

What gets your heart racing?
What gets my heart racing is being with a group of people who love to knit and create and who love to be creative. Nothing is more satisfying than teaching people something new that they will share with their friends. Trendsetter is my company…in fact its my life. I love sharing the yarns that I create, the patterns I create and then have people come and show me what they’ve made in my yarns. Having people appreciate “my yarns/my kids” as much as I do really gets my heart racing.

Barry will also be featured as one of the designers in the upcoming Knit Red book. For a sneak peak at his pattern (and the 29 others in the book), a digital preview is available here.

Thanks Barry for your fabulous yarn, patterns, and commitment to the cause!

Blue Sky Alpacas Goes Red!

We asked the folks at Blue Sky Alpacas why they're choosing to Stitch Red and what melts their hearts. Here's what they had to say:

Blue Sky Alpacas chose to be involved with the Stitch Red campaign because when Laura at Jimmy Bean's Wool asked, we knew it was the right thing to do. Ten of eleven employees have been touched by heart disease here at Blue Sky. With this disease affecting so many near and dear, becoming a part of Stitch Red was a great way for the whole Blue Sky staff to become involved in awareness and prevention.

Blue Sky Alpacas had already designed the Techno yarn in Cha-Cha Red [featured above] when we were invited to participate in the Stitch Red campaign. We felt that Techno Cha-Cha Red was perfectly suited to Stitch Red because of its duality. Techno is new technology; the latest advancement in how it is possible to create yarn. Blue Sky thinks all knitters and crocheters deserve the latest and greatest. We certainly feel that all people deserve the best technology when it comes to taking action to fight heart disease. Blue Sky Alpacas Techno may be new technology, but it is also yarn; used to make garments for centuries. Knitting and crocheting can be a slow task that takes time and perseverance. Much like heart health, you have to be committed, you have to want to be healthy. It takes time, but the results show one step stitch at a time.

The Blue Sky Staff is taking a heart healthy step in the right direction. We try and go for a walk together everyday. That time sure flies by when you have good friends to chat yarn with! It's always easier to do something difficult when you aren't alone.

Here at Blue Sky our hearts melt for the newest member of the Blue Sky Family! Jones [the handsome alpaca shown here] joined the herd in late February and we just cannot get enough of him.

If you love the cardigan shown above, you'll be pleased to know that this Stitch Red pattern and the Stitch Red Techno yarn in Cha Cha Red it's shown in are available together in kit form here. Just find your size to purchase the pattern and all the yarn you need for this cardigan. And, of course, 5% of Blue Sky Alpaca's gross profits from sales of both the pattern AND the yarn will go to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of The Heart Truth®.

Lindabelinda Talks Heart Health and Creative Design

This week we interviewed Dr. Linda Ruggiero, of Lindabelinda Ceramics. As an independent designer who has pledged to donate 100% of gross profits from the sale of her Stitch Red buttons, we wanted to know what her thoughts were on the Stitch Red campaign, heart health and her commitment to the cause. Check out her heart-warming answers below.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Stitch Red campaign?
"I am a huge advocate for promoting awareness through craft. I support several initiatives in this way, and when I learned about the Stitch Red Campaign, I was immediately on board. Having grown up with a father who suffered two heart attacks during my childhood, followed by triple bypass surgery and implantation of a pacemaker, I am well aware of the prevalence and dangers of heart disease. I am also a firm believer in preventative health care, and I try to demonstrate this in my own lifestyle with a daily yoga practice and a healthy diet. I also believe that preventative care is made possible through education, and I support Stitch Red for its commitment to that."

What was your inspiration behind your Stitch Red product?
"As an avid knitter and ceramicist, I enjoy combining clay and fiber arts in different ways. One way is through the creation of handmade ceramic buttons, which can be functional findings for knitwear, as well as aesthetic, decorative accessories. When I learned of the Stitch Red Campaign, I decided to design a line of heart-shaped red buttons embossed with a feminine floral design. The buttons are also available in a simple round shape, with the same color scheme and design."

What's your heart healthy tip?
"I believe it is most important to reduce stress in one's life as much as possible. I have learned through both personal experience and through my training as a neuroscientist that stress reduction is accomplished through positive emotions, and so I believe that everyone should do one thing a day for themselves. Life should be enjoyable - and so often we get caught up in routines and deadlines and neglect taking care of our own interests and happiness. Giving to one's self is important - it allows us to better give to others and makes us healthier individuals - both physically and emotionally."

What gets your heart racing?
"I am most thrilled when I  am learning new skills or having novel experiences. I love to travel and to see how others implement crafts in their daily lives. I also love working with children - particularly in creative settings. Kids are so free and uninhibited - they come up with the most exciting ideas. And I adore the pride that children take in work they have made themselves. They are the best teachers."

Thank you Linda, for your generous (and beautiful) contributions to the campaign and for your insight. We're proud to have you on board.

If you would like more information on Linda, please visit her custom-design website here, or her Etsy page, here.

Local Yarn Store Crafting Healthy Hearts With Monthly Stitch Red Knit Night Educational Series

Presenter to Talk Trends & Provide Risk Reduction Tips for Heart Disease

Reno, Nev. (March 21, 2012) – University of Nevada, Reno Graduate Research Assistant, Heidi Lengdorfer, is joining Jimmy Beans Wool, local retailer of yarn and fabric, to educate women about cardiovascular disease and how they can protect their heart health. The free Stitch Red Knit Night event will take place on Tuesday, April 3rd at 6 pm and is part of an ongoing educational series focusing on heart health hosted monthly at Jimmy Beans Wool’s retail location at 1312 Capital Blvd. #103 in Southeast Reno.

Stitch Red Knit Night is part of a high-profile nationwide heart disease awareness campaign, Stitch Red, founded by Jimmy Beans Wool and supported by a majority of manufacturers and retailers in the Needlearts Industry. The campaign is driving efforts to draw attention to heart disease, help women understand the risk factors for the disease and encourage the adoption of healthier lifestyles so they can protect their heart health.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States and the Needlearts industry is made up of 98% women, so we need to draw attention to this deadly illness and help make the fiber community and women everywhere aware of their risks and informed on how to lead healthier lives,” said Laura Zander, owner of Jimmy Beans Wool.
Lengdorfer is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Public Health and is writing her thesis on the public health implications of heart disease for women in Nevada. She will discuss noteworthy heart disease and cardiovascular disease trends; showcase how Nevada and Washoe County stack up to the U.S. in heart disease trends; explain gender differences in cardiovascular disease; and draw attention to risk factors and provide tips on ways to reduce risk for heart disease.
“As a knitter, a customer of Jimmy Beans Wool, as well as a public health graduate student, I was excited by the opportunity to speak about the threat of heart disease to other women who share my interests and bring awareness to my own community, said Lengdorfer. “I hope to encourage other women to protect their heart and vascular health for longer, happier lives."

Attendees of the Stitch Red Knit Night will be able to preview and purchase official Stitch Red products for which a percentage of gross profits will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) in support of The Heart Truth®, a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Heart disease and hand knitting, not the usual combination

Plymouth Yarn Company was approached by Laura Zander about joining Jimmy Beans Wool and The Heart Truth Campaign,  in June 2011.  We were very interested in the project and the need to spread the word about the #1 killer of women in America, heart disease.  Knitters are very passionate people.  Knitters care, and share.  Knitting is about community and charity.

Stitch Red is such an awesome way to spread the word about the disease, and offer knitters a way to get involved in the program.

We have dedicated 2 new products to the campaign:

Encore Worsted, 75 Acrylic 25 Wool, and new color 475, to the project.  You can purchase the color here.  You can see the entire Encore Worsted colors selection here.  America’s Best Selling yarn for decades, this yarn is Machine Wash and Dry.  Encore Worsted is an easy care for knitters of all calibers.   It is a prefect yarn to knit for gifting projects.   Our design teams has developed a new pattern (2193), this will be available for purchase real soon.
One of the best of the best, Eros II was the top selling novelty yarns of all times.  You can create beautiful Scarves, Shawls, Tops, and even Jewelry.  We have developed this free pattern (F418) for your use.  Click here to Free Pattern.

We were unable to attend the The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection Fashion Show, on February.  But you can see great images from the event here, courtesy of Jill Seiman, GLAMAMOM.com.  The fashion show was a huge success.  You can also see excerpt the fashion show on You Tube.

Plymouth Yarn Company was one of the first to join with Jimmy Beans Wool to help promote this important campaign.  We are pleased to be involved with this very high profile cause.

Please join us and help spread the word about Heart Disease.

My Heart Belongs to Daddy: Stitch Red = Heart Health

I've always been my father's daughter.  We loved the same kinds of foods; had the same passion for life; were both Type-A personalities who started our own businesses. But one thing that I'm determined not to have in common with my father is heart disease.  When he died at 79 of congestive heart failure, I decided then and there that I was going to take very good care of my heart. He would have wanted me to.

So I lost 25 pounds, found an exercise routine that I truly loved (NIA and yoga), started eating more fruits and veggies (see one of my favorite root veggie bake recipes below) and am almost a vegetarian. I also dumped my addiction to cookies and chocolate and discovered that my acid reflux no longer exists!  One more thing: I take time for myself (hot baths, quarterly vacations to the beach so I can float mindlessly in the Gulf of Mexico, massage therapy and a struggling but growing meditation practice. Oh yes, and I laugh a lot!

When Leanne Pressly from The Wool Wide Web, a social media marketing consultant to the yarn industry, first told me about Stitch Red (it was TNNA 2010), I knew that this campaign to promote women's heart health to the stitching community of knitters, crocheters, spinners and weavers was for me! My father would have been proud!

But the big question was: How was I going to do this?  Who could I reach and how?

Cotton Clouds' website (www.cottonclouds.com) reaches over 2,000 readers a day, our newly updated and fastly growing Facebook page is approaching 3,000 friends, our monthly e-newsletter goes out to over 5,000 dedicated Cotton Clouds' customers.  I take personal interest in each of my customers and care not only about meeting their fiberarts needs, but in their general welfare as well.  Some customers have been a part of the Cotton Clouds' family for all 34 years we've been in business. They are friends. If I could wake up just one person to the warning signs of a heart attack and heart disease my mission would be a success.

Cotton Clouds launched our own online Stitch Red campaign. On January 10, 2012 our Stitch Red e-newsletter went out to over 5,000 readers.  Click Here to read a copy. If you do only one thing, please Click Here to watch the video “Just a Little Heart Attack” by Emmy winner Elizabeth Banks. It might save your (or a loved one’s) life! Do it now!

But we didn't stop there.  As a way to celebrate women's heart health, Cotton Clouds has designed five Stitch Red kits for:

  Weaving (A Red Chenille Scarf)

Rigid heddle weaving (A Multi-Textured Scarf)

Of course they're all in Red!  Each kit includes a Czech glass heart bead that can be sewn on the finished project.

We really wanted to make a difference, so we are donating the requested 5% of sales and another 5% on top of that to The Heart Truth from sales of these kits.

If my Stitch Red campaign saves just one life by alerting my customer to good heart health, I’ll consider my efforts a huge success. Together within the fiberarts community we can support each other and live long, happy and productive lives.

What gets my heart racing? I love that feeling of hiking up a really steep hill and upon reaching the top, looking out over a beautiful vista and feeling my heart furiously pumping in my chest. It's the combination of "I did it", the physical sensation of blood pulsing through my body and the beauty of nature that surrounds me. I guess you can say what get's my heart racing is mind, body and spirit wrapped up into one!  It's great to be alive!

- Irene Schmoller

Jimmy Beans Wool Hosting Unique Stitch Red Knit Night

Local Yarn Store and Dentist Come Together to Stick It to
Heart Disease With Unique Knitting Event
Knit Night to Educate Women About Tie Between Oral and Systemic Well-being

Reno, Nev. (January 30, 2012) – Jimmy Beans Wool, a local retailer of yarn and fabric with a strong online presence, and Dr. Zeny N. Ocean, a Reno dentist specializing in total body health through dentistry, are coming together to educate women about their risk factors for heart disease and how they can adopt healthier lifestyles to protect their heart health. The free event, Stitch Red Knit Night, marks the first in a series of monthly Heart Health knitting events to be hosted at Jimmy Beans Wool’s brick and mortar store located at 1312 Capital Blvd. #103 in Southeast Reno and will take place on Tuesday, February 7th at 6pm.

The Stitch Red Knit Night is part of a national campaign, Stitch Red, which was founded by Jimmy Beans Wool and is supported by a majority of manufacturers and retailers in the Needlearts Industry.

Dr. Ocean focuses his dental practice on encouraging optimal overall health for his patients through prime oral hygiene. He has studied the links between dental health and heart disease and is adamant about educating people about how they can help prevent the illness with simple tips like flossing every day and strengthening the immune system through proper oral hygiene. “There are hundreds of types of bacteria that live in the mouth, which can enter directly into the bloodstream and greatly increase the risk for a heart attack,” said Ocean. “Flossing is one simple, key way to help prevent the transfer of bacteria into circulation – you can be extremely fit and healthy, but if you have poor oral health, your chance of getting heart disease is much greater.”

For more information about the Stitch Red Knit Night and to reserve your spot, please call 775-827-9276 or email info@stitchred.com.

Whether you’re ready to go head-to-toe red this season to fight heart disease, or prefer to show your support for the cause in more subtle ways, Interweave has an abundance of patterns that fit all personalities and knitting skill levels.

Shirley Paden Bernstein’s Almost Serious Suit is a great ensemble for work and play. This sophisticated, sleek jacket and tapered skirt combo has a fun fur flair at the collar and cuffs.  We think this suit would be perfect for anyone who wants to make a bold statement about fighting heart disease while looking sensational. Plus, each piece could be worn separately for more wardrobe options for the “Lady in Red.”

Fighting heart disease is a heartwarming effort, which is why a warm, cozy jacket is a great way to show off your red stitches. Choose from various coat and jacket patterns, such as the Hedgerow Coat (left) by Deborah Newton or the New Pea Coat (right) by Teva Durham. Both these knitted jackets have a classic shape, fun collars, and stitch detail that will delight. Plus, these red, timeless jackets would look great on anyone!

Heart disease should be fought every day, and it’s easy to show your fighting stance with knitted accessories that can be worked into your existing wardrobe and worn with everything. Knit up Kristin Omdahl’s Sweet Lily Shawl to decorate your favorite dress, or throw on a pair of Daring Red Boot Socks designed by Cecily Glowik MacDonald for fancy feet. Knitted accessories are always useful, and red ones are especially noticeable.

You can also show support for fighting heart disease in your home. Interweave offers fun home décor patterns, such as afghans and throws, table runners and placemats, and more. The Cathedral Afghan by Kathleen Power Johnson is a beautiful piece that would also make a great gift for friends and family. If you know anyone who suffers from heart disease, you can show your love and support for her battle by bestowing her an afghan such as this and give her hope to bravely fight.

Welcome to Stitch Red!

Welcome to our Stitch Red blog!

You may be wondering, what is Stitch Red? Stitch Red is a national campaign to raise awareness about the number one killer of women in America, heart disease, started by Laura Zander, owner of Jimmy Beans Wool.

This high profile campaign aims to inform women of the dangers of heart disease, encourage them to lower their risk factors and help them stay heart healthy! Jimmy Beans Wool has partnered with The Heart Truth® campaign for women (the little red dress on Diet Coke and Campbell's soup cans!) and many others in the needlearts industry to “Stick it to Heart Disease!”

We will be adding more events and updates on the campaign as things progress. Please take a look around the site and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at info@stitchred.com !

Thank you for joining us in Sticking it to Heart Disease!
